For over a century, the name John Deere has been synonymous with dependable performance in demanding industrial applications. Building upon its proven industrial engine technology and its diverse marine portfolio, John Deere is addressing the unique challenges of the marine industry with its latest additions: the JD14 and JD18 marine engines.
JD14: Compact Power for Versatile Applications
The JD14 is a 13.6L, 6-cylinder engine that packs significant power in a streamlined package. Ideal for such applications as pilot boats, pleasurecraft, and smaller workboats, the JD14 boasts an anticipated power range of 298 up to 599 kW (400 up to 803 hp). Notably, this engine features a reduced package size compared to the John Deere 13.5L 6135SFM85 engine, offering greater flexibility in installation and design.
The JD14 will be available in two models: the JD14P with a power range of 298–448 kW (400–600 hp) and the JD14X delivering a robust 523 up to 599 kW (700 up to 803 hp). The JD14 will also be available with variable-speed auxiliary and constant-speed auxiliary and generator ratings, further enhancing its versatility.
JD18: Engineered for Heavy-Duty Operations
For those operating in the most demanding commercial environments, the JD18 stands ready to deliver. This robust 18.0L engine is specifically engineered for heavy-duty commercial operations, such as commercial fishing boats, passenger vessels, and tugboats. The JD18 will offer anticipated power levels of 410 up to 599 kW (550 up to 803 hp), and will provide up to 522 kW (700 hp) of uninterrupted power at the M1 rating and up to 599 kW (up to 803 hp) of power at the M2 rating. Like the JD14, the JD18 will also be available with variable-speed auxiliary and constant-speed auxiliary and generator ratings.
Key Innovations in the JD14 and JD18
To bring the JD14 and JD18 marine engines to market, John Deere built upon its clean-sheet industrial Next Generation engine architecture and prioritized customer value at every stage of the design process. The JD14 and JD18 will offer a number of new and improved features, including:
- A high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel system to optimize fluid consumption and help boost fuel economy for commercial operations facing tightening margins.
- A rear gear train that provides customers with up to two rear PTOs and capacity for auxiliary power.
- An overhead camshaft design and hydraulic lash adjusters to achieve better valve fit and eliminate valve lash maintenance.
- Higher duty cycle* and up to a 500-hour extended fluid service interval, keeping vessels at work on the water longer.
John Deere marine propulsion, generator, and auxiliary engines are built with the same unwavering commitment to reliability and serviceability that has established John Deere as a trusted name in the industrial sector for decades. This dedication to exceptional performance, optimized efficiency, and rugged durability will support marine customers as they take on whatever the marine industry throws at them.
